Background
The Colossus of Rhodes, circa 292 BCE, was a massive bronze statue of the sun god Helios, standing over 100 feet tall at the entrance to the harbor of Rhodes. Built to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over invaders, it was one of the tallest statues of the ancient world. For over half a century, it symbolized strength and unity before an earthquake brought it crashing down in 226 BCE.
Ancient accounts describe it as a breathtaking sight:
“But even lying on the ground, it is a marvel. Few men can clasp their arms around its thumb, and each of its fingers is larger than most statues.”
— Pliny the Elder, Natural History
